Stiles birthday in April actually makes a lot of sense. It means he turns 17 just after Season 2. It means he got held back at some point and, given what we know of him, it was most likely after falling behind due to either
A) his ADHD
B) the panic attacks after his mom’s death
And it means he’s a year older than the other sophomores.
Just like Allison.
See? It makes sense that when Allison told Scott her real age, his first assumption was NOT stupid/slow etc. His first assumption was “what life circumstances could have lead to her falling behind, like Stiles did. Oh, yeah, all the moving around.”
And it helps to explain why Scott didn’t know about the panic attacks, despite the fact that they seem close enough to have been best friends forever. Stiles got held back and, once he’d finally returned to school, made fast friends with the first kid he met, who, given Scott’s personality, probably didn’t have any other close friends.
Also makes it more plausible that the 22-23yr old(my guess) Derek seems “just a few years older” to Stiles.
Stiles being older says a lot about his feeling of inadequacy, feeling like he should be better than he is. Feeling inadequate for having gotten held back in the first place.
But it also says a lot about Scott and how observant he is.

AND I’M NOT EVEN DONE YET. IN THE LAST ONE, DEREK HAS TO GO SAVE SCOTT’S MOTHER FUCKIN ASS AGAIN SO HE TELLS STILES TO BREAK THE CIRCLE OF MOUNTAIN ASH SO HE CAN GET THROUGH. AND STILES’ FACE IS LIKE “WAIT HE JUST SQUEEZED MY SHOULDER WHAT DOES THAT MEAN DEREK NEVER SHOWS AFFECTION TOWARDS ANYONE EVER” BUT HE DID, THEN. HE DID SHOW AFFECTION. I’M JUST SAYING THAT WE’VE NEVER SEEN DEREK WOLF OUT ON STILES, LIKE HE DOES WITH SCOTT WHEN THEY HAVE A BITCH FIGHT EVERY OTHER EPISODE.
